Good Oral Health Is Key
The benefits of good periodontal health obviously include not
only being free from infection, but a youthful look and attractive
smile as well as being able to chew food comfortably, without
problems. In recent years, medical science has begun to show through
substantial research that people with gum infections are at significant
risk for other diseases:
Diabetes People with diabetes are aware that
they are more at risk for periodontal disease. Research has
shown that gum infections often make it difficult to control
blood sugar levels.
Heart disease The same bacteria that cause gum
infection can enter the bloodstream and contribute to the chemistry
that forms arterial plaque and clogs arteries. Also, the by-products
of inflammation around the teeth may clog the arteries.
Respiratory disease A number of respiratory diseases,
such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, can be affected by bacterial contaminants
from the gums. These problems can impact people who smoke, the
elderly or people who have suppressed immune systems.
